First off I will warn that i only found this game a few days ago and while i've been going through the goodies section quite a bit it's still alot to take in.

As to how much power you have in design i think it depends on how many items you would have to put into the design. If you just have a few handfulls of systems that are updated and upgraded over time being able to do designs yourself is less of a issue. The other end of the spectrum is if there are dozens and dozens of types of systems then being able to pick and chose becomes much more important. In MOO, Space Empires, and Stars! there are tons of things to go in a ship so having control is moreimportant. As opposed to Galciv, SW rebellion and some others the research focuses on theory and not actuall systems. Either way is doable. Smile

Anyways from what i can tell i'm intrested in this game so far and can't wait to find out more since i was slightly disappointed in moo3 and Stars! Supernova is in statis with no certain future. Crying or Very sad

Oh, BTW JosEPh, What mods are you using on moo3? I always thought it had the possibilities of being much better than it was....

NacNud, if you haven't checked the MoO3 forums for a while you'll be in for a pleasnt surprise. A dude called Bhruic has modified the .exe file and corrected almost all of the major bugs and has managed to mod things that were impossible before, for example you can now have up to 50 taskforces per side in a battle rather than the standard 10 (it'll be quite slow with 50 though, you can pick what number you want).

Check out http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=224 and go to the Fan Mods forum and the Patcher v0.5 thread.

I kind of like the design 'mentality' for lack of a better word -- like with the Federation your ships are defensive, good firepower, but really focused on sheilding and lots of ship space is devoted to peaceful pursuits as well. And then the Romulans like to sneak attack, decloak at point blank range and hit you with everything they've got, and they carry quite a bit. Etc.
...

This can be accomplished with different weapons/armor/shields etc for each race. In your example above, the Federation might have good shields, medium armor and great long range weapons. The Romulans might have crappy long range weapons but really powerful short ranged weapons, better armor and cloaking devices but no shields. Klingons might have relatively small ships with lots of weapons but low armor and shield capability to give them ships with a big punch but with a "glass jaw" so to speak. This gives each race a distinct (and enforced) style. Of course balancing such a design would present a bigger challenge. Balance can also come with manufacturing capability.
