I thought I would post this question in this section.

Just a simple question.

Who has played GC2? I've need played the original, and am thinking of buying GC2 but have read mixed reviews.

Is GC2 a game worth buying?

I've enjoyed the first game...it's solid.

There's a demo for GalCiv 2 but it didn't grab me...can't say why. Anyway, i believe it's a good game and the support is constant.

Cheers

Yes the support is great.
They constantly release patches and game tweaks.

I like Galciv2...

pros:
-AI,
while still ( Wink )not on true human level it is the best computer game AI I ever have played against.
-ship designer,
a great toy in itself. Smile graphically design your own ships! Wink
-graphically attractive in general
-many good ideas in diplomacy

cons:
-still too much mirco
-doesnt overcome the standard problems of 4x startegy ("perfect techtree", an early "domination treshold" after which there is no chance in you losing anymore, few strategic choices besides the ones that proved to be the best)
-no MP
-many of the good ideas in diplomacy dont work perfectly yet
-space fights is a number generator with graphical presentation

It has no true "big flaws", but except the ship designer galciv 2 does not manage to truly set any new standards.

I haven't really played it for any length of time to have a 'real' opinion. But the graphics are great for a space strategy game and it's pretty easy to play (by this I mean, for a new player to get into the game). It's really different than MOO and more like civilization in space.

I actually played the original on OS/2 what seems like eons ago. The game has certainly evolved.

I think its a solid game; I enjoy it much more than GC1. One thing that seems to help is that it doesn't take itself seriously - the tech descriptions and diplomacy are littered with fun comments that lighten the mood. I giggled when I first got called a "Cheese eating surrender monkey." Great stuff.

The three-way weapon system adds a lot of strategic depth to how you build your fleets, and the AI will counter your designs. Diplomacy is still limited to a few "states": war, trading, allied, peace. There's little benefit to an alliance other than to have a friend in wars. However, your relations with other races are well explained, if you have a huge military or are the wuss of the bunch, others will react accordingly. Stationing your ships right next to someone's planet gets them mad too... Go figure.

Thanks for the great response guys.

For those of you holding your breath awaiting my decision, I went out and bought the game on my way home from work today.

I would recommend you guys check out OS's review of GC2. Even if you have already bought it Smile you might still find it interesting.

I have 1 and played the demo.

I found that the depth was there but not the width/scope so did not get it.
