Some things that I would LOVE to see on the realistic front that would add to the fun factor as well...
The Science:
Scanning: Seeing a fleet of ships in a star system lightyears away is impossible on our current tech level... we can't even see earth size planets. However, seeing large spikes in energy would be visable - so like when fleets of ships moved from one place to another it MAY be detected.
The Fun:
Early on you wont be able to see anything moving around anyhere...even in star systems near your own. As you tech gets better, or your spies become entrenched - you would begin to see things more clearly. Not knowning the fleet strength of an enemy when you "jump" into thier space would be scary...and fun.
The Science:
Faster than Light travel. Again...currently impossible although we see some maybe's out there. "Warp" Drive, Worm Holes, Star Gates, Sub-Space, Solar Sails, etc etc.
The Fun:
Having more than one way to travel with benefits and penalties to both. For instance... perhaps "Warp" is the fastest way to travel and gets easier to master - downfall is can be seen by everyone within 30 lightyears. Versus... Solar Sail tech, slow - however, can't be detected hardly even at the highest scanning levels...but really really slow.
Star Gates: Instant travel from one location to another, downside...must build gates and it costs a fortune to maintain and build in the first place.
What are your ideas for "The Science, and The Fun" ??? |

The title is really the crux of it. Along with implementation.
Those are some excellent ideas OrionSol, I especially like the detection method. Right now the scanner tech functions exactly as you describe in the science method but there is no quality of detection you either detect or don't. Your progressive approach (detection information) is much more fun and something I've added to the cool things to do!
Some of the different ways of movement are implemented in Horizon. But they can easily be abused or unbalancing so have to be careful to consider all the positives/negatives. _________________ Horizon - Lead Designer |
