I had a candid interview with Talk Strategy recently about L3O and what it's like to be an independant developer.

The full interview is here: Talk Strategy

Here is an excerpt:

Quote:
TS: Tell us about the L3O team and how you got together and decided to make a game.

I first got the idea that I wanted to make a 4x space strategy game back in 1994. Several things had happened from 1992-1994, Master of Orion (the
original) and Star Control 2 were released and then Babylon 5 the TV series came along. This was an amazing time for sci-fi fans/gamers and what influenced me to embark on this journey.

Fast forward to 1999, I had taught myself game programming on Windows (before that I was a Commodore/Amiga fanatic) and had a rough draft of what I wanted to do. I had the good fortune of meeting a talented and creative artist (Andy Nastase) with a decade of experience in 3d and graphic design in TV broadcasting. With his commitment to the project we could build the rest of the team. It took two years but at the end of 2001 we had three artists, two programmers and some financial backing to begin development.

The project has so far involved roughly ten people with most of the work done by our core team of five people.

Well done on a great interview, and I agree, the early to mid 90's were a great time for scifi and strategy gaming. Not only did Moo come out, but other games like Civ.

The article gave me the impression Zaimat is excited about his game in much the same way I remember being excited about MOO1 and Privateer. Maybe it's because I was young. Maybe it's because computing and computer gaming was still new for me, but I have yet to find a game that can capture the essence and experience of those early games. It sounds like Zaimat is trying to do just that and that gets me excited.

Although we can not bring back the past we can guide the present into a future we want.

Lets hope Horizon has a good guide.

I agree,

I, by no means, am expecting any game to bring back or be the past. I don't that's a good nor realistic thing. I also don't think anyone wants the past, it's all about the future. I think what people are looking for is that essence or spirit that made those early games what they are, this is what I think the Horizon team seems to embody.

Not only that, Zaimat and the Horizon team are enthusiastic gamers themselves, so they know what makes a game enthralling from experience. So their driving source is the love of the game, which I believe, seems to be translating into how the game feels from what we know so far.
