Just checking to see if there is anything that can be updated re Diplomacy & how it is likely to work.
Cheers

"Broker Peace"

So that your two allies don't drag you into their war.

"Call Galactic Council Meeting"

If we're having a sci-fi UN that is!

Work on Diplomacy has been delayed as we've worked on other things that affect it and needed to be finished first. But I'll give you guys some info:

Interaction with alien ambassadors will be done in the 'normal' method where you open communications and they appear on the COM.

You will have all important reports/information on hand (same screen) and get to see a list of options (dialog).

Some of these options are:
. Different levels of trade agreements that facilitate trade
. Intelligence and research sharing
. drawing up an armistice, peace pact, non-agression, alliance
. Co-ordinated actions between allies
. Making tributes
. Demands
. Sanctions and Blockades

Sounds groovy Zaimat! It'll be nice to have some real interaction with the other empires. Particularly if we are in an alliance/coalition with them.

Just as a refresher, would you be able to say whether the...

...will allow us to defuse hostile situations between (potential) allies before the fighting starts?

This is most likely to be the "joint war effort" section. Would you be able to elaborate whether this will involve more than the declaration of war allies can call upon from each other?

Edit: Also, what sort of mechanism are you guys working on to facilitate the joint planning and operations we might wish to conduct/produce with our allies? (I know this is a little OT, so feel free to start a new thread Zaimat! Very Happy )[edited]

We have planned for an influential race to be able to exert pressure on other races. How much we will have to see once we are further along... Defusing hostilities between 'friends', inciting a race to go to war with their neighbours...

This mainly applies to joint war efforts, such as for co-ordinating an attack or defending.

This I really like the sound of...and it is something I suspect is a genre first. I can't recall any other game allowing us to do such a thing.

So will there be any planning facilities for such operations? As an example, would we be able to divide up an enemy empire's targets so that our attack was co-ordinated, or will my ally be able to send ground troops to a colony whose space defences my troops have neutralised but do not have the capacity to take by land.

Would that then mean the planet would belong to my ally and not me? Or will we have a facility to divide up the spoils of war?

Our aim is to build the basic foundations, so there won't be any sort of 'planning facilities where you co-ordinate in detail who will do what', perhaps in Horizon 2 Smile

In it's current design, a planet for example is heavily fortified, so you tell your ally to help mount an attack and they will send ships (if they agree or are able to). It will be up to you to land troops or you can ask your ally to take care of the invasion in which case they will own the planet if they succeed (you could always ask them to give it to you after). As for the spoils of war, this is yet to be determined.

Sounds great to me too. These are options i've been looking for for a long time in such a game. Cool
Will there be also some defense coordination? like: our forces can't defend that colony in time but you might...will you help us? [edited]

Have you ever thought about implementing an option allowing to "trade" units (=ships)? It is a feature which had long not been realized in a game. Pax II had it and I think Civ2 even. [edited]

I appreciate your advice Rob and we have very similar thoughts although we haven't decided exactly how it will be done, still weighing all the options until that time.

I'll give some info (keep in mind this may yet change) on where we are leaning toward.

We would likely start with a very small number of testers and see how it goes and slowly expand the number of testers along with the advancement of the beta testing.

We will definately "hand-pick" most if not all testers, if we ever do decide a lottery at a later stage it will be limited to a handful of people at most.

As for being secretive, well I won't comment on our intentions or it wouldn't be a secret Wink but we definately won't waste time with unique versions or anything of the sort.[edited]
