EDIT: The Contest is now closed! Thank you everyone for participating and providing some great ideas for random events! We will be reviewing them all and announce the winners soon!

Video Report 1 Video Report 2

Random event contest

We are planning to add random events in Horizon! What random events? That’s up to you and our community to decide!

If you have a cool or funny idea for a random event and would like to see it in Horizon, you can submit your idea under this thread. The contest will run for the next 2 weeks, we will then review each submission and pick the best ones that can be added to the game.

The winners on top of getting their random event in the game will also get special mention in the credits. Multiple submissions are allowed.

Rules for submissions:

The submission should be structured according to the format outlined below and the events must fit the sci-fi theme. By submitting an idea you agree to give all rights freely so we can implement it in Horizon. We reserve the right to make any changes necessary to work it within the game as we see fit.

Submission guidelines:

1. Events must be beneficial or harmful in nature (gives a bonus or penalty for a time)
2. Events must have a beginning and an end (or be instant)
3. Events can happen to a Race, Colony/System or the whole Galaxy
4. Events that require some action on the player/AI part should be simple and straightforward

Format (with example):

Title: Population Boom
Description: A sudden population boom on a random colony that will increase population growth
Effect: Doubles the population growth
Duration: 10 turns
Player/AI action to stop the event (optional): None
Beginning News Report: The availability on the Black Market of a previously prohibited alien aphrodisiac has sparked a population boom on Earth. Experts are studying the effect of the substance on the population.
End News Report: The Population Boom on Earth has ended and things have returned to normal. Scientists could not find any medicinal effect from the substance and the novelty of it has worn out among the population.

Title: Revolt!

Description: A non-council alien race has revolted against their employers and a huge battlefront has mounted in XXXX. You will need to choose a side and quell the fight as anyone trying to be neutral in that sector will be attacked from both sides.

Effect: During conflict, all neutral ships of any race will be attacked by both sides making system travel deadly. Picking a side upon entering the system for the first time will align you with one side or the other (making you friendly with chosen and unfriendly with the other) if you quell the threat before the duration of the war you will be rewarded based on the side you chose. If the duration of the fight goes on too long. Both sides will die and no rewards gained.
You will get a prompt with which side to choose and what bonuses are available. They could change event to event. Workforce increase, industry increase.

Duration: 50 turns to allow generation of a fleet to send to battle and to allow multiple engagements to quell the fight.

Player/AI action to stop the event (optional): Player is able to choose a side to fight on becoming allies with one side and enemies with the other. Then assisting in destroying the enemy side to quell the fight. AI could choose sides or continue to be neutral and avoid the system.

Beginning News Report: A revolt has occured at a small militia base as the alien workforce has risen up against their employers for an unknown reason. The sector is currently being labeled as a nofly zone and any who pass through could be drawn into the fight.

End News Report: A previous revolt that had resulted in bloodshed has finally be resolved.
A: The militia was able to quell the workforce with the assistance of the ___ race, while the battle was not what they wished to occur they are happy to announce they have about 200,000 job openings. Please apply in person and unarmed.

B: The workforce was able to overpower their employers and with the assistance of the ____ race they are now free from their contracts. They would like to offer their services to any who need a reliable and strong workforce. Please note that mistreatment will result in the destruction of your entire company. Please contact them in person with large sums of credits.

C: The battle was long and deadly and due to both sides being evenly matched, there are few reports of any survivors on either side. Let us all see this event as a reminder to pay your employees well, and to not call in too many sick days. Or you all will die.

(hey! I gotta make the art for all these ideas :p so I wanna toss one in too lol )

Title: Knowledge Nano-Virus
Description: A mysterious nano-virus threatens to permanently erase established galactic technology from databanks and population memory.
Effect: Will erase a tech from the game permanently, unless 3 or more players agree to make research points together to stop it within the time allowed.
Duration: Variable
Player/AI action to stop the event (optional): Pool research points with other empires.
Beginning News Report: A Nano Virus is destroying galactic knowledge. Scientists report destruction of information about [Tech Name(s)] from our computers and memories. Empires will have to work together to find a way to eliminate it before the galaxy loses discoveries forever.
End News Report: Result 1(failure) : The galaxy has a strange feeling that something important was lost. Historians everywhere are working to find out what was lost but there are few leads so far. Result 2(success) : The temporary research alliance celebrates today the eradication of the Nano-Virus and the preservation of [Tech Name(s)]. We all hope it doesn't happen again soon.

Original idea : A mysterious nano-virus threatens to erase up to 2 tech(s) (more often 1) that at least three other players/empires have, from a game permanently, unless at least three players/empires agree to try to work together to raise a certain number of research points based on the value of the tech and number of empires in the game, before a certain amount of time runs out. The time needed would be based on the level of the tech relative to the the average research capability of all empires in the game. It's an opportunity for diplomacy if you want the tech, or change in strategy or planning if there are mixed benefits for watching it be erased or if you don't want or need the tech for your empire or alliance. The event would choose military techs more often than others since they have the most important and obvious effect, or even up to two unrelated techs to make the decision more interesting.
Edit : I think it would be best if the tech(s) that the game picks would be one that isn't too old, to keep it/them from being easy to ignore if lost. The game could make a list of techs that at least 3 players have, and then sort it in order of discovery time, discard techs below the median discovery date in the list , and choose a tech that is near the (previous) median discovery time or higher.

Title: Pirate Raiders
Description: Pirates raid a quadrant (sector 1-6).
Effect: Colonies within quadrant have random reduced effects in areas of trade, entertainment, farming, industry, or research.
Duration: 10 turns or until player takes action (see below).
Player/AI action to stop the event (optional): Pirate fleet spawns in random sector within quadrant (deep space). Each turn that the pirate fleet remains results in an increased penalty as they drain the economy. After 10 turns, the pirate fleet disappears and the economy within that quadrant slowly recovers from the raid.
Beginning News Report: (I'm not good on dramatics, but) ... "Pirate Raiders showing no fear, can they be stopped?"
End News Report: (depends on player action, one of two possible reports) ...
(1) If Pirate Raiders destroyed before 10 turns ... "Player Race put's an end to piracy in quadrant X ... for now" (chance to roll event again in that quadrant decreases).
(2) If Pirate Raiders survive time limit ... "Pirates unmatched in quadrant X, this only means they will be more power full next time!" (chance to roll event again increases but with a much stronger fleet or fleets, or perhaps in multiple locations).

Thanks !!!
Rob

3 Part, Invasion from Beyond

Title: A Plauge on all your Houses (Part 1 of Invasion from Beyond)

Description: A sudden population decrease (loss of population) on the capital worlds of all the races.

Effect: Puts population growth on effected planets to -1 million pop per turn, Also mistrust (during this time all races go to negative standings with each other unless they are in an Alliance until a cure is found)

Duration: 20 turns (if no cure is research for a race)

Player/AI action to stop the event: Research Cure, Can trade once researched to other races to gain favor

Beginning News Report: An unknown nano-virus has effected (list worlds), much speculation is happening as to who spread the virus, many of the races blame each other for this turn of Events.

End News Report: The Nano virus has been destroyed through out all of the galaxy now due to a major break throughs on researching a cure by many different empires. It has also been stated by each empire that they where not the creator of this virus and that research on the technology used in the virus shows signs of tech not of this Galaxy or at least none that any races has ever seen before in this Galaxy.

----------------

Title: They Come from Beyond (Part 2 of Invaders from Beyond)

Description: A fleet of unknown ships are sent to each homeworld to try an invasion, fleet size depends on how strong the race in question is. Tech level is high on all invading ships, Invasion ships will also have troop transports and try and invade the homeworld (likely to fail)

Effect: Each Races homeworld will have an invasion fleet, 2 sectors away from it appear and head towards that home world. Also any race you help defeat the incoming invasion will get major boost to how much they like you.

Duration: Instant

Player/AI action to stop the event: Destroy all invading ships

Beginning News Report: An armada from out side this Galaxy has appeared and is attacking all of the Major Empires in our Galaxy. It is time to set aside differences and wars and focus on defending our Galaxy from this horrible threat.

End News Report: The Alien Invasion has been stopped... Is this the last we have heard from these Invaders from Beyond?

---------------

Title: They have come to stay! (Part 3 of Invaders from Beyond)

Description: A previously unknown star system (or a system that is not controlled by anyone if creation of a star mid game is not possible) has been taken over by these invaders as they set up a home base for more attacks on the residents of this Galaxy.

Effect: A new but considered minor race is created and has a homeworld now that they have moved to this galaxy. They are considered to be at war with everyone and sport very advanced tech. They will also try and conquer other planets and start with a sizable armada at their home planet (no ability to colonize just conquer, also no ability to research tech above their starting tech levels and no ability to communicate with them). Taking over the Homeworld will be a major advatage to any race as it boost their reputation with all races and gives advanced tech from outside this Galaxy.

Duration: Instant

Player/AI action to stop the event: Destroy all of the invaders and conquer/liberate the worlds they control.

Beginning News Report: The Aliens from Beyond our Galaxy have done the unthinkable and moved a star system from they galaxy to ours in an effort to exterminate all life from the galaxy.

End News Report: The Alien Invaders have been exterminated and after invasion of their homeworld all of the Empires have come to gether to create a new device that will prevent them from every invading again... Or so we hope...

Title: Black Hole Sun
Description: A micro black hole has fallen into a system's sun and any races populating its planets should prepare for the inevitable…
Effect: Destroys system, creates black hole (extremely rare event, maybe once in a game)
Duration: 10 turns
Player/AI action to stop the event (optional): None
Beginning News Report: Scientists have detected anomalies within the ___ system’s sun, and our worse fears have been confirmed, a micro black hole has fallen into its sun. There is nothing anyone can do to stop the inevitable; the ___ system only has ___ turns before it is destroyed.
End News Report: The ___ system is gone. Everything was sucked into the black hole that is all that remains where its sun used to be. Whether caused by nature or some malevolent technology, let us hope that we never witness anything similar…

Title: Vampire Nebula

Description: A strange new class of nebula has been discovered that is mobile and appears to drain energy from anything it encounters.

Effect: A mother-ship sized nebula cloud spawns randomly in the galaxy and proceeds to the closest populated system, where it will drain the life from the population of the largest colony (50% population loss per turn for 5 turns, at the end of 5 turns all population on planet lost). The cloud is only vulnerable to <x> weapon (random for each event). If it has not been destroyed before it has completed feeding for 5 turns, it regenerates its health and spawns a child nebula. Each nebula will then proceed to other close populated systems (not the same one) and begin the process again.

Duration: Until all Nebula are defeated, or no life remains in the galaxy.

Player/AI action to stop event: Discover Nebula vulnerability and defeat in combat

Beginning News Report: Scientists are excited to report the discovery of a new class of nebula, which seems to be attracted towards their science vessels. Strangely, contact has been lost with the first vessel conducting detailed research...

End News Report: All life in the galaxy can exhale in relief that the Vampire Nebula crisis has been ended by the swift actions of our brave military forces...

Title: Zero Point Energy Fluctuations

Description: Alarming fluctuations with the amount of zero point energy being generated between star systems has made interstellar travel extremely hazardous.

Effect: Any ship in a sector not containing a star system has looses 5% of its health each turn it remains outside such a sector

Effect: No trade or tourism income for the duration of the event

Duration: 10 turns

Player / AI action to stop event: None

Beginning New Report: Travelers are reporting extremely damaging emissions of zero point energy throughout the galaxy. Trade and Travel have been severely curtailed, and the Galactic Council is recommending all fleets should remain at port.

End News Report: Brave traders risking life and profit between the stars report that Zero Point energy emissions have faded to normal background levels.

Title: AI Revolution - Enemy within
Description: The advanced entertainment complex AI on planet X has gained consciousness and seized control of the minds of the populace whilst wearing artificial reality headsets, enslaving the population (invasion of the mind snatchers) and seizing control of planet X (late game event)
Effect: Control of planet X is lost to the entertainment complex AI (advanced complex must have been built on the planet) - treat as a new AI race with all techs that player has and ship designs (builds defensive ships only that stay in orbit)
Duration: Indefinite until planet(s) retaken. If left unresolved the rebel AI will spread to neighbouring systems taking control of more planets unless the advanced entertainment complexes on them are destroyed.
Player/AI action to stop the event (optional): Ground troops must be sent to destroy the entertainment complex and rescue the enslaved population - AI controlled population and troops will resist so sufficient ground troops must be sent to subdue them - bombardment will reduce happiness across empire. If successful the planet is retaken but the entertainment complex is destroyed and % of population unable to be subdued is lost. AI controlled ships and orbitals must be taken with boarding parties before ground assault can begin - again a % of the crew will be lost - destroyed ships/orbitals causes unhappiness in empire. Temporary increase in happiness across empire due to liberation of population and elimination of threat. Computer technology boost from lessons learnt from rebel AI, cannot happen again to player (now immune). Option to use rebel AI as weapon by introducing it to another races entertainment complexes.
Beginning News report: The entertainment complex AI on planet X has taken control of the minds of the populace on planet X through their virtual reality headsets. Unless troops are sent to regain control, rescue the population and destroy the rogue entertainment complex AI, then it is feared that its influence could spread further creating panic on planets with similar entertainment complexes. End News Report

Title: Intergalactic Ghost Ship
Description: An intergalactic, high-tech, crewless ancient alien ship comes from nowhere and the first to capture it by visiting the star or planet it orbits gets the ship. Empires who both get to it at the same time will need to resolve the problem with diplomacy (option : move your ships away from ghost ship....options : and we'll give you x, or else we'll attack, etc) or by attacking the other empire until only one empire's ships are within a short radius of the ship in the system view. Until then, the ghost ship will have no owner but will only remain in the galaxy for up to 15 turns after the dispute.
Effect: News announces the ship and the system it's heading for, the turn after any empire detects it on scanners. More often spawns the ship near an empires borders who was doing badly for most of the game based on score. 25% of the time it's an "Intergalactic Ghost Colony Ship" that has a random assortment of as many weapons as a colony ship can carry and a one use full colony pod full of colonists whichever empire captures it first. Like the military ghost ships, it can't be refitted, taken apart for techs, and gets scrapped for 0 credits.
Duration: 12 turns after the ship is detected on scanners , or 30 from when it enters the galaxy and is not discovered, whichever comes first. Or, 15 turns after it is under dispute.
Player/AI action to stop the event (optional): Capture or ignore the ship. Duration variable, see above.
Beginning News Report: [Empire Name] today has found a strange ship heading for [system name]. It's between borders and up for the taking. What will become of this mysterious ship?
End News Report:
Option 1 : [Empire Name] has taken claim of the mysterious ship and was last seen moving crew aboard.
Option 2 : [Empires involved] have both started close scans of the mysterious ship. The galaxy wonders whether a claim can be resolved peacefully.
Result 2b : [Empire who takes the ship by force] has taken military action this week resulting in the destruction of [empire's] ships at [system name].
Result 2c : (After 5 turns) Ownership of the mysterious ship is still up in the air today as [empires involved] decide how to handle the situation.
Result 2d : [Empires involved] have come to an agreement at last, giving control of the ship to [empire that got it].
Result 2e : (after 15 turns of dispute or 12 turns of no claim at all) The mysterious ship has vanished today with no trace, leaving many government and corporate prospectors confused and disappointed.

Original paragraph :
Intergalactic Ghost Ship
More often comes into the galaxy nearer empires borders who have been doing badly for most of the game. Comes out of nowhere and then on a warp speed course to an uninhabited star system, isn't reported in galactic news until someone detects the ship on scanners. Has high techs, can't be taken apart to discover them, gets scrapped for 0 credits. 25% of the time it's an "Intergalactic Ghost Colony Ship" that has a random assortment of as many weapons as a colony ship can carry and a one-use full colony pod full of colonists whichever empire captures it first. Can't be refitted, taken apart for techs, gets scrapped for 0 credits.

Title: Resource Shortage Hysteria
Description: A corrupt politician in your empire is capitalizing on the population's fears of resource shortfall. Traditionally stable commodity markets are being thrown into upheavals as speculators trade on the fears of investors using faked reports and media gullibility. Persons with no knowledge of geology or industrial production suddenly claim to be experts on "peak unobtanium".
Effect: Political power is offered at the cost of economic and production instability.
Duration: 10 turns after
Player/AI action to stop the event (optional): Capture or ignore the ship. Duration variable, see above.
Beginning News Report: [Empire Name] today has found a strange ship heading for [system name]. It's between borders and up for the taking. What will become of this mysterious ship?
End News Report:
Option 1 : [Empire Name] suppressed the corrupt politician, at the cost of a decrease in popularity as his un-indicted co-conspirators carry on the fraud wherever they are uncaught.
Option 2 : [Empires involved] increases popularity at the cost of economic hardship and productivity decline as the corrupt politician being embraced by the establishment.

It's all fun and games until there's an enemy fleet controlling your orbitals.

Title: The Eater of Worlds Returns

Description: An ancient ruin is found on an already colonised planet, a prophecy that the Eater of Worlds will soon return is discovered.

Effect: Decreases the workforce by (X %) till the creature hatches, but gives a significant increase in research output until then (the research boost is greater than what would be lost from the workforce penalty). It also gives a chance to discovering a new technology as well.

After the creature hatches: It will attempt to destroy any ship or orbital nearby, and then it will blockade the planet. The creature will also slowly decrease the population of the planet it is blockading.

Duration: 5 turns till the creature spawns, Creature: Instant (remains till destroyed)

Player/AI action to stop the event (optional): Sending a fleet to patrol the system will cause the creature to hatch early (ending the bonus and penalty sooner, and making the creature spawn in a weaker state: it will still blockade the world if not stopped but will not reduce its population each turn).

Beginning News Report: Archeologists on <Random Colony> have recently discovered ancient ruins on the planet. Though this will significantly boost research, a prophecy of an Eater of Worlds has caused hysteria in the local population as the translations indicate this Eater of Worlds will return soon. The local government urges the system to be patrolled in case the threat is real.

End News Report: The prophecy was true; the Eater of Words has arrived and has become a threat to local shipping and to the planet’s population. The governor of <Colony> has issued an emergency request for military aid before the colony is destroyed by the beast.

News Report after the Beast is Destroyed: <Colony> breaths a sigh of relief as the local military successfully destroys the Eater of Worlds.

Title: New Solar System Formation

Description: Billions of years in the making gaseous nebula clouds condense from a gravitational collapse of primordial heavy elements forming a unique solar system (range from 4 to 9 planets -with a rare chance of becoming a binary star system).

Effect: Unique solar system has rare minerals not found anywhere in the galaxy; a 10% population growth, economy, technological or military strength (ships or troops) from this system.

Duration: permanent (instant) or duration for formation 10 turns.

Player/AI action to stop the event: none

Beginning News Report: Strong gravimetric waves emanating from Sector X, XX. Avoid this sector at all costs. Reports have come in from colonized planets from 3 sectors away of gravimetrical disturbances causing destruction to buildings and loss of thousands of lives, and loss of ships that travel in 4 sectors of the event.

End News Report: Report from sector x, xx have shown a new solar system formation, scientists around the galaxy are eagerly in studying this new system. Populated star systems around this sector are returning to normal.

Title: Ruffling of Space Fabric
Description: Ruffling of space fabric causes things to be moved unxpectedly!(?!)
Effect:
Option 1 : Individual ships are moved instantly to random points in a 1-2 square radius of where they are. Happens over single or multiple larger divisions of the map (10x10 sections?) scaling with map size.
Option 2 : Fleets are moved instantly to random points in a 1-3 square radius of where they are. Star Bases are sometimes (33%) moved for 1-3 turns and automatically moved back to where they were after that.
Option 3 : (Rare) A planet is moved to a random point in a 3 square radius of where it is (can change orbit in same system). Because of warping of the nearest star's radiation too, its habitability condition stays the same.
Option 4 : (Rare) A star system is moved to a random point in a 7 square radius of where it is (Minimum distance moved of 2 squares.. moves adjacent to another star system if another would already have been in the place it was going to move).
Option 5 : (Rare) Black holes are moved distances of 3-7 squares, and another may appear nearby.
Duration: Instant, happens multiple times during a game in large areas, size scales with map size. Very unlikely that star systems or black holes will move twice in one game. But the events are more likely to happen as map size increases. So, the events scale to a small extent with map size.
Player/AI action to stop the event (optional): None
Beginning News Report: Something is stretching space apart near [area]. [Fleets, (ships generally), [Planet], or [Star system] isn't where it used to be! Experts think whatever was moved by neutrino-gravitonic flux will stay there unless it can move itself back or be pulled. Star Bases will be tugged back to the planet they orbit.
End News Report: N/A

Title: Revolution
Description: Major shift in a AI players leadership
Effect: A revolution, assassination, accident or something like that eliminates the leadership of an AI race. Another intern faction gains power, radically shifting the races attitude towards other species. Friendly attitudes shift to hostile, treaties are nullified, maybe contact is lost. Those actions could be streched over multiple turns. First the message from the incident, the successor regime establishes, after that the relationship goes down the scrapper...
Duration: Instant
Player/AI action to stop the event (optional): None
Beginning News Report: The matriarch of the Kamzak/The Raskan prime minister/... was murdered/was killed in an accident/was dethroned/.... The situation is unstable, we'll keep you informed.
End News Report: The <AI race from above> has a new leadership. The new gouvernment declared that they will lead the race to another promising future, liberated from all foreign influences of other races.

Edit:
There could be two ways of implementation:
a) the shift in relationship is pure superficial: shift relationship points, cancel treaties, but let the AI act as normal, so relation will soon recover to the usual state.
b) Re-parametize the AI algorithm so that the AI really does behave otherwise than the standart setting (if it's possible, don't know how the AI is implemented)

Duration: Instant for effect #2 above, Random delay for effect #1 above ... 5-10 turns (player cannot remove item, it's frozen)
Player/AI action to stop the event (optional): None.
Beginning News Report: Two possible reports :
(1) Delay ... " [race] pushes too far when constructing [item], project delayed [x] years as they clean up the mess."
(2) Destroyed ... " [race] pushes too far when constructing [item], project destroyed."
End News Report: none.
