What to do after succesful invasion

Hello,

I just invaded a planet, but I'm puzzled about the 3 options I get to choose.
I understand the extermination part.
But what does the assimilate option do? (I'm Dutch, so I don't know this word, can't find the meaning either)
Subjugate (or something) enslaves the population, but what are the pro's and con's?
Also what are the pro's and con's of the assimilate option?

Assimilate will convert the population slowly to integrate in your empire. It's more costly and takes many turns but once fully assimilated, you get the full benefit from their population (morale/workforce/etc)..

If you subjugate they will never be happy and won't perform to their fullest but it doesn't cost you anything extra and they produce immediately.
