Does anyone know what the dig order is used for? Archaeology?

So when you find a planet with ancient ruins or something with your scout then issue the order dig the next time? What happens, a bonus?
Or do you have to send ground troops or something to dig? How many turns? Will try out tonight.
Sounds like something that could be streamlined, just give the bonus when survey turns it up.

You can do it with your scout and it will probably give you a (significant) boost in on research field.

Ancient advanced ruins also will have significant advanced colony buildings that only need to be repaired once you colonize the planet.

Last game I found such a city and the planet grew in a relative few turns into my best colony even better than my homeworld. That was really nice. :D

And no, I find it rather good that its not "streamlined" to surveying.

It is also how you find new technologies to research.
