Question about Colonies

Post by tykemalcolm »

I'm new to the game and have a question regarding Colonies/outposts. What is the intended function of a military outpost? It doesn't appear that any buildings/structures can be added to it, so what is its use?

Welcome!

An outpost is a basic military colony without any population or civilian buildings. So it doesn't have any of the maintenance requirements or the initial investment required to set up a new colony.

An outpost can be an effective way to increase supply ranges for your ships. It can be a forward base of operations for your fleet to get repairs/refit/upgrades if you have shipyards or star base built. It also extends your communications range (Interstellar com has limited range) for military orders and diplomacy. It also extends and increases your visibility in that sector.

Basically it's a cheap colony that serves as a good military base without requiring as much as a colony. So the planet can be of poor quality and still serve it's purpose.

Building a colony will likely cost more in future updates especially on non-hospitable worlds. We are also looking at extending the scan range/visibility of outposts/colonies with star bases even more than it is now.
