Re: Late game steam rolling?
A really good point! I also have done the same with some strategy games (like MOO) where upon reaching a certain point usually in technology and fleet size there is no longer a challenge to finish the game. It's a really tough nut to crack. I think it has to do with game balance and also requires a ...

Re: Developer Notes
Posted on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 5:08pm... Greetings all, I wanted to give a little update on what we have been working on lately. As I mentioned in my previous note we started Quality assurance (QA) testing of Horizon. Although testing goes on throughout development, QA is a much more systematic...

Developer Notes - cross-posted from Facebook
Originally posted on Facebook on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 4:55pm... Hello everyone, it has been an exciting time for us the past week and we hope you are as excited about as we are! Horizon has been a grand project close to our heart from the start. A game we wanted to make for ourselves as well a...

Re: An Interview with Strategy Informer
The tactical combat view looks a little strange with that side on view. Why not have the top down moo2 style? The view is 2.5d (isometric) and it is a lot more interesting than just flat top view. You can also show 3d depth this way, so planets are further back, the sun even further etc with paralla...

An Interview with Strategy Informer
I had a nice chat with Joe Robinson over at Strategy Informer a short while ago, he had some really interesting questions for me. You can read the Interview here:

Re: Sobriquet’s Guide to the ‘Horizon’ Galaxy – Part I
When we will get a video showing the gameplay like tactical combat? Should be sooner than later. We are working hard to bring it all together and if we can open up the game to the community early like we want to this will also be taken care of but I plan on making a video regardless if this happens...

Sobriquet’s Guide to the ‘Horizon’ Galaxy – Part I
Personal Note As part of the first group to study the recovered Kor’tahz computer data discs; I was tasked to write a primer for all new Earth Alliance officers. Because my original work “What We Know So Far” became HUGE and untenable, it was decided to split it up into several parts that can provi...

Re: Gameplay questions
1. Is combat occurring on a separate map or is it happening in a system map? The Horizon map (galaxy) is one huge persistent map on all levels. So movement, combat, everything is happening on the same map. There are no artificial restrictions like instanced combat (eg: like in Master of Orion). So ...

Re: Introduction Thread
DevildogFF great idea starting this! As for a little description about myself: My first computer was a Commodore 128 and later an Amiga, had some of the best time of my life gaming with those machines. Played Star Control 1+2, later found Master of Orion 1 on PC. I would then mod MOO in a Hex editor...

Re: Please make the screens easy to see and text readable
I think there is some confusion with some developers who think in order for UI to be good and modern everything needs to be iconized, small or hidden.. While there is a good argument for less clutter, I think we also want to see well laid out pertinent information at a quick glance. A more balanced ...

Re: Suggestion for gameplay ideal
It's an interesting idea. I see the dynamic expansion (size of galaxy) as potentially "a new level of the game". You fight and expand in your little corner of the galaxy and once you 'win' you then move on to the next level. Almost like an rpg (start in the local town dungeon) then move on...

Re: Suggestion/Question
I use dual monitors and work hard at using the second screen when playing some of my favorite games. Agreed, dual monitors work great both for gaming and general use. I think Bigleon was suggesting a dual monitor/screen setup built into the game as a feature similar to how it is in Supreme Commande...

Re: Suggestion/Question
Welcome Bigleon and thanks for the comments. It's an interesting thing they have done in Supreme Commander, not many games support dual monitors in this manner including Horizon. I'm not sure how many players actually use this mode, would be interesting to find out. There is also AMD Eyefinity mode ...

Re: Race Names
Thanks for pointing that out Aigokeros. It's a bit ambiguous like Veneke noted.
Although the current emperor united the clans and gave the lords some say he still holds most of the power. So in essence it's not a true republic so I'll strike that out.

Re: Suggestion for gameplay ideal
I was unaware of this type of co-op mode, you've got me very curious.. I have played age of empires 3 for a little while in single-player mode. The closest would be playing Rise of Nations in multiplayer 2v2, it was a lot of fun but hard to arrange (it was during Christmas holiday). On a certain lev...

Re: Race Names
Thanks! We are trying our best. About race names, like you said it's very tricky to make alien sounding names when as humans we really have no idea what that would be like. So it is very subjective. From a design point of view I wanted Horizon to be closer to hard sci-fi and have a more immersive un...

Re: Any news would be good news
Steam (love it or hate it) has done a pretty good job both for developers and consumers with their system and captured a very large chunk of the PC market in the process. Other stores (with some holdouts) are selling games with Steamworks. This has some benefit to us indies because we can support on...

Re: Any news would be good news
Have you considered getting green-lighted on steam? Lots of games get bulk of their sales on steam nowadays it seems. We are definitely looking at Steam (and other distribution stores). Steam is certainly the most important one right now for most core games. The GreenLight program is an interesting...

Re: Any news would be good news
We currently have 1024x768 as the minimum resolution. This was our minimum for optimal UI design purposes. I just tried removing the limiter and was able to run it at 1024x600 in windowed mode on my PC. There are some minor text/display issues we would need to fix to fully support it at the same lev...
