I have to take a little run-up on this one.
Finally, I found a method to massively reduce the time spent in battles with moving every single ship to the desired position: I order my fleets to destroy the enemy colonies. This takes more rounds as fleet mostly is finished before turn 20 and could do some damage to the next planet in this run, but I can use auto combat mode and quick run to save A LOT of time. The disadvantage on this approach is that I hardly get the chance to invade planets because my attack force is so strong the enemy colony is actually wiped out in less than one run (home worlds excluded).
This brings me to my suggestion: I'd like to have an option to cancel the fleet command while being in combat so I can command "destroy colony" on the galaxy map and while in combat cancel the order once defenses are down and the amount of soldiers is low enough for a successful invasion.
Alternatively I'd like to have a command like "eliminate defenses" which bombards a planet until only 10k soldiers are left.

Re: Add combat option to prevent total wipeout of colonies
While i personally never invade planets, i just burn them to the ground and then colonize them since my race is far superior (advanced race option enabled), so i just either invade and commit genocide and then build up the colony or just wipe out the colony and then colonize it.
The whole bombing phase of the invasion is abit bad, i prefer the master of orion 2 way of doing things, its perfect, you can bomb them and when it just leaves the amount you want, you just invade, currently you can't even tell what they have as defenses, they need to add that at some point and be able to specifically target those facilities when bombing.

I switched to that approach too because I find it too time consuming leading the bombing myself. But for really large planets with lots of inhabitants it would be easier to drop some troops. In my first games I had troops aboard my mothershipsLithari wrote:While i personally never invade planets, i just burn them to the ground and then colonize them ...
