[1.0.0.92] Supply containers differ due to ship size

Post by Xyquas »

I had an strange effect with supply containers: My scout had a larger operational range than my colony ship although both had 1x supply containers installed.

I report this as a bug because I'd expect supply containers to scale with the ship size, so at larger ships a larger crew is supported resulting in an identical operational range.

Here are two images to visualize this problem:

Colony ship selected

Did both ships have the same type of engine and at the same level?

I found that the range you can travel depends not only on supply pods but the type and level of engine you have.

I once had 2 scouts, one had nuclear engine 1, the other nuclear engine 2.
The one with nuclear engine 2 had a longer range than the one with nuclear engine 1.
And I would not be surprised if the power generators you use have something to say as well.

I believe this is mainly dependent upon your current level of logistics.
Up this tech to level 3 or 4 and add some additional supply pods and you can go a very (very) long ways out.

As you can see on the screen shots (just follow the links in my first post), both ships have exactly the same techs at the same levels. And it can't depend on the logistics level because it's the same turn.

Once your logistics level goes up a few then if you build a new ship or it gets refit then it travel almost the entire map , assuming of course that you have it outfitted with supply pods.
What I like to do early on in the game is build a small unarmed scout and mount an aux pod which gives me room for a supply pod. It has no weapons but has quite a good reach which allows you to explore quite a lot area before sending it to the local star base to get refitted. It should be noted though that level 1 logistics is not far at all.Your first scout might be able to cover a couple squares past a colony but as said once you get this tech up you can go quite far.

I feel I didn't make my problem clear:

- I have 2 ships.
- Both have been built simultaneously.
- Both have the exactly same techs - look at the images, PLEASE (okay, ECM is different, but that's not related to operational distance in any way)
- Both are equipped with 1 supply pod.
- Still they have different operation areas.

@keller
Although I appreciate your tip on equipping the first scout, it doesn't answer my question. By the way: We both had the same idea - as you might see if you take a close look on the first picture's bottom left corner :D

Oh - in case the German translation is confusing, here some vocab:
Triebwerke --> Engines
Generatoren --> Generators
Vorratscontainer --> supply pods
Ergänzungssonde --> expansion pod

Master Of Orion 3 = Trash
Horizon = The real Master Of Orion 3 :-)

I now had a game where the engine made a huge difference for the distance. Luckily, I had your post still in mind so I thought about this and it actually makes sense: If I have supplies for 6 days, the speed I can travel at determines the distance I can go. Because I can travel 3 days to the point of no return and assuming I can travel all way with maximum velocity may range is higher if I have a faster engine.

Unfortunately this still doesn't answer my initial question. I'm still wondering why different ships of the same species built at the same time with the same techs and identical amount of supply containers can have different operation areas.

I dont have an answer to your original question.
I'll take a look at it unless the devs have an answer for it before I get around to it again.
Right now I dont have much interest in playing due to the issue with hitting targets I posted in a different thread.

Supply Bays/containers take a fix amount (30) of available space on the ship. Thus each installation provides a certain amount (100) of supplies.

Bigger ships consume more supplies (which affects their range). The hull size required supply ratio is the following: 1/5/10/20

Small ship with 1 supply bay has same range as Medium ship with 5 supply bays and so forth.

---

And yes engines augment ship range as well because you can travel faster with same amount of supplies.

---

Supplies are pooled together in a task force. So it's possible for example to have a transport ship full of supply bays to augment the cruisers/motherships etc.

Now this makes perfectly sense. I could have guessed this myself but somehow I missed that the pods are the same size for any ship. :oops:

Didn't know that. I can't remember having read this somewhere but this is a really cool feature. It would be even cooler if I could tell my supply ship to not take part in a battle :wink: - of course it will be equipped with a cloaking device :D
